Text: Romans 1:1–4
Title: “The Gospel of God”

The opening words of the book of Romans focus on the gospel. What is amazing about that is that Paul is writing to saints (v. 7), people who have already received the gospel. Why write about the gospel when writing to the church? In Paul’s case, it is both an introduction and an explanation. Paul desires to make his way to a city where he had not personally taken the gospel or established the churches. He was always fighting accusations that his message of the grace of God was some self-styled perversion of God’s previous revelation. Paul begins Romans contending that his gospel was God’s gospel. He not only wishes to demonstrate this from Scripture, but to be used by God to strengthen the grasp of the Roman believers on what the gospel is and what it means for every believer. In his introduction, he begins that work and we will see how he begins to make his case. The outline for Sunday morning is the following:

     I. THE CREATOR OF PAUL’S GOSPEL (v. 1)
II. THE CONSISTENCY OF PAUL’S GOSPEL (v. 2)
III. THE CONCERN OF PAUL’S GOSPEL (vv. 3–4)
IV. THE CONFIRMATION OF PAUL’S GOSPEL (vv. 4)

Songs we will sing this week include the following, provided in a Spotify playlist here or a Youtube playlist here:

  1. Praise to the Lord
  2. Jesus is Better
  3. Christ is Mine Forevermore
  4. See the Destined Day Arise
