Text: Mark 14:22-26
Title: “A Powerful Table for Perpetual Blessing”
This Lord’s Day we study the final legitimate Passover Feast. Jesus passes bread to his disciples and says that it is his body. He then passes wine to them and says it is “the blood of the covenant,” which was poured out for many. In doing this, Jesus fulfills the original intention of the Israelite Passover feast instituted in the book of Exodus. When the people are consecrated before God at Mt. Sinai, Moses took some blood from the offering and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you” (Exod 24:8). Now in Mark 14, Jesus, the only perfect Passover Lamb, pours out his own blood on “the many” (Mk 14:24). The lamb in the Old Testament was but a shadow of the true Lamb of God, who by his own blood saves the world.
We watch and listen as the Lord Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper, and we think about what it is, why it was given, and what we anticipate as we partake of it.
