Preparing for Worship: May 7, 2017
Text: Mark 5:21-43
Title: “Lord over Life and Death”
Look at Christ. Watch Him, and listen to Him. What we are meant to see answers a question we’ve heard more than once in our study of Mark: “Who is this man?”
He is the Lord, that’s the answer. We have seen His authority over nature (4:35-41). We have seen His authority over the powers of darkness (5:1-20). This Lord’s Day we are presented with a day in the life and ministry of Jesus that magnifies His lordship in two additional ways. Jesus has authority (1) over disease, and (2) over the last enemy—death.
We will watch and listen as the providence of God has Jesus meeting with two people who are very different, and yet very much the same. He meets with a poor woman who is motivated by 12 years of pain, and He meets with a man of reputation who is motivated by the life of a daughter who represents 12 years of joy.
We will examine the passage under three headings:
- A DESPERATE MAN AND A WILLING LORD (vv. 21-24)
- A DEPLETED WOMAN AND AN ALL-SUFFICIENT LORD (vv. 25-34)
- A DECEASED DAUGHTER AND A LIFE-GIVING LORD (vv. 35-43)
Songs we will sing this week include the following, provided in a playlist here:
- Solid Rock
- How Great Thou Art
- Psalm 126
- He Will hold Me Fast
