Preparing for Worship: September 2, 2018
Text: Mark 11:12–24
Title: “The King’s Previews of Judgment”
We have noted how Mark sometimes uses a “sandwiching” technique when presenting the life and ministry of Christ. He begins with a story, shifts the scene to another story, and then finishes the first. When Mark does this, we find that the two stories relate to each other, which helps our interpretation.
This Lord’s Day we will see that Christ’s cursing of the fig tree and His cleansing of the temple both picture judgment. The King has come to save the world, but in doing so He will also judge the spiritual fruitlessness of Israel.
We will be reminded that Jesus is not just the Lamb of God who dies for sinners, He is also the Lamb who will one day come in wrath (Revelation 6:16).
I. CHRIST CURSES THE FIG TREE (vv. 12–14)
