Text: Romans 2:1–11
Title: “How to Rescue a Moralist”

The first chapter of Romans has demonstrated man’s sinfulness by his suppression of God’s revelation in nature. When we come to the second chapter, Paul envisions the response of the Jewish religious moralist to what he’s just written. Paul knows that his fellow Jews would agree that pagan sinners are worthy of God’s wrath. In Romans 2:1–11, Paul demonstrates why the Jewish moralist is also headed for the wrath of God to be revealed at the end of the age. Paul’s explanation of these things also represents evangelism. So we should consider the verses in terms of rescue. We will look at the passage under four headings:

     I. TELL THE MORALIST THE TRUTH ABOUT MORALISTS (v. 1)
II. HELP THE MORALIST RECOGNIZE HOW HE MINIMIZES HIS SIN (vv. 1b–2)
III. TEACH THE MORALIST THE TRUTH ABOUT GOD’S COMMON GRACE (vv. 3–4)
IV. WARN THE MORALIST OF THE WRATH OF GOD (vv. 5–11)
