Text: Romans 2:17–24
Title: “The Perversion of Privileges”

As the apostle Paul continues to prosecute God’s case concerning the guilt of the entire human race outside of Christ, he now addresses the guilty by name. He has clearly indicted the Gentile world in chapter one, and now he speaks directly to the Jewish one in chapter two: “But if you call yourself a Jew” (2:17). What follows is a list of privileges that the Jewish religious moralist of his day took refuge in. Paul will expose such a person’s hypocrisy, but as he does that, he also exposes a perversion. Hypocrisy, in the religious realm, almost always involves a perversion of privileges. God’s good gifts are misunderstood and misapplied, and the reason people do this is because those privileges have not been spiritually assessed and appropriated. This Lord’s Day we will consider that reality, think about how it continues to take place, and be reminded that Christ is able to rescue religious moralists.
